ScienceDirect Maintenance

From 09:30 on Saturday August 2nd to 05:30  on Sunday August 3rd, ScienceDirect will be unavailable due to an upgrade of the administrative system that will improve the access and entitlements process to the platform.

Digimap Maintenance

After a hardware failure to their service machine on the 22nd July Digimap have temporarily restored full service capability.

However, until the faulty hardware is replaced, all Digimap Collections will remain unstable and may become unavailable at any time. Engineers are monitoring the service closely, and further information will be posted when available.

Ovid shuts IBSS

The International Bibliography of Social Sciences (IBSS) won’t be available via Ovid after the 31st July.

It’ll only be available on the EBSCOhost platform. The links on the Databases A-Z have been changed.

Swets fixes Wiley

Blackwell journals on Swetswise are working again.

Swets say they had “some unexpected problems with the cookie structure” when the content shifted to Wiley Interscience.

But clever SwetsWise “has created a workaround so that all full-text articles are fully accessible once again”.

Well done, SwetsWise boffins.

OPAC, Athens and Authentication

We’ve made a link to OPAC which automatically authenticates users. It’s the link on our Electronic resources page .

It’ll help people who want to access electronic resources from OPAC. By using this link they won’t have to remember to authenticate first.

We’re also arranging a meeting to discuss how we can make authenticating less of a problem for OPAC users. The meeting is on the 5th August in Harrison around 10am. Could we ask for interested volunteers, please? Could you email us if you’d like to take part.

We’ll confirm the exact time and room in the next week or so.

At the meeting we also want to discuss Athens and authentication in general. How do we re-phrase the way we talk about them now that Athens is being superceded?

New ejournal from wlv

What’s special about The Journal of Health and Social Care Improvement? Well, we think it’s the first ejournal published by the University.

The first issue is available at www.wlv.ac.uk/chsci/ejournal.

(If you know of other ejournals published by the University, could you let us know please?)

Trial – Cambridge Histories Online

The entire Cambridge Histories (about 25 volumes) are available full-text on line as part of a trial that we have set up recently (runs until 16 August). The trial is available direct on campus. Users should click Guest and the the link Cambridge Histories Online.

EBSCO Nursing & Health Trials

We have trials for the next month of the following EBSCO health and nursing databases:

  • BNI
  • Medline with Full Text
  • PsycInfo
  • Psychology & Behavioural Sciences Collection
  • AMED
  • Health Source: Nursing Academic Edition

Access is campus only and through the EBSCO Host site.

Enhanced Credo Reference

Credo

Credo Reference have announced the release of an enhanced version of their service on August 4th. You can preview the updated Credo Reference site by visiting the current site and clicking on the new link at the top of the page that reads, “Try the New Credo Reference” and you will be logged onto the updated interface in the final beta test stages.

For details on many of the new features, download an overview at http://corp.credoreference.com/credo_july08 (pdf).

Authenticating for OPAC

Just a reminder:

You need to authenticate with Athens before you access electronic journals or ebooks on the catalogue (OPAC). Use this page to authenticate. (There’s a link to it on the OPAC start page).

You’ll be returned to the main Electronic Resources page.  There’s a button there to click you through to OPAC.

If you don’t go through authentication, when you click on an OPAC link to an electronic journal or ebook, you’ll more than likely hit an Athens page asking for a username/password.

Could you let us know if your students or staff are having problems with this, please?
